In the ever-evolving landscape of STEM, young innovators like Ava Flanigan are not only breaking down barriers, but also setting new standards for diversity and inclusion. A sophomore in college, Ava is pursuing a dual degree in computer science and engineering, challenging stereotypes and advocating for a more inclusive tech industry.

Ava grew up in Georgia, where her passion for STEM was evident early on. Her inspiration is rooted in a desire to address the lack of resources in her community. Observing that many young individuals lacked opportunities to explore STEM, Ava aims to implement programs that foster a love for these fields, cultivating self-confidence, and instilling an appreciation for their community. 

In her freshman year, Ava, alongside a friend, developed a smart dog collar designed to help dogs associate specific scents with their homes. The innovative project secured them third place in a college competition and is currently under development. Additionally, she completed a three-month internship at Nvidia, a leader in AI computing,  further honing her skills and expanding her influence in the tech industry.

However, her path was not without challenges. Navigating a field historically lacking in diversity, Ava emphasizes the importance of maintaining her identity and authenticity. She credits Spelman College for providing an environment where she feels seen and valued, reinforcing her commitment to her goals. 

“As a Black woman, if I were in a space that was predominantly people who did not look like me, they might not be looking for me. But when you go to a place like Spelman or Howard or Tuskegee, they’re looking for you.” — Ava Flanigan

Ava Flanigan is also addressing the critical issue of diversity in technology, particularly concerning biases in artificial intelligence. She questions the inclusivity of data sets used in AI development, citing instances like sensors on automatic soap dispensers failing to recognize darker skin tones. This observation underscored the necessity for diverse perspectives in tech development. 

Ava’s journey is marked by collaboration and mentorship, she acknowledges the support from her peers and mentors at college, who have played a pivotal role in her development. Embracing failures as learning opportunities, Ava remains resilient, viewing setbacks as integral to her growth and success. 

Looking ahead, Ava envisions technology evolving to include internal bias detection in AI systems. She advocated for the development of mechanisms that can analyze and mitigate biases without human intervention, ensuring more equitable technological advancements. 

Her broader goal is to amplify Black female representation in STEM, serving as an advocate for inclusion and equity in engineering and technology. Ava’s message to aspiring women in STEM is powerful: “Go to places where you’re going to succeed and you’re going to grow and you’re going to excel, because at the end of the day, you’re meant to achieve greatness.”
